Honda Civic - It's an Attractive and Comfortable Car, Bags of Fun to Drive

The Honda Civic is a radically designed family hatchback which is built by one of the world's most technologically innovative car makers. Despite this, Honda has a reputation for conservatism as its cars have traditionally appealed to older buyers, largely because the exterior design has typically been rather unadventurous. Not here though, as the Civic combines cutting-edge interior and exterior design with some great engines, excellent reliability and superb practicality. This latter point is largely down to a carrying capacity that's much better than most key rivals, but the car's popularity is also helped by the generous equipment levels.
It's an attractive and comfortable car, bags of fun to drive, and it's British-built. What more could you want?
Honda should be applauded for avoiding the temptation to tone down the Civic from their earlier concept designs.
The triangular foglights and exhausts, visor-like headlamps and racy, squat forward profile are all present and correct and give it a dramatic, purposeful poise.
Why should buyers of small cars like this be spared such vanities as folding mirrors, or stealthed rear door handles, which make the five door car look like a coupe?
HONDA CIVIC - Did you know?
  • The Civic accounts for around a third of Honda's global sales, with the car having been produced in 11 countries and sold in 160.
  • When launched, the Civic had by far the biggest boot of any car in its class. Whereas the typical capacity was around 320 litres, the Civic could accommodate 485 litres
  • While most petrol engines feature just one spark plug for each cylinder, the Civic 1.4 I-DSi powerplant features a pair of plugs for each cylinder
  • When unveiled, the eighth-generation Civic was awarded the highest ever pedestrian safety rating by EuroNCAP

Honda Civic - TYPES
  • Sep 2005: The eighth-generation Civic reached showrooms, with a choice of three engines. The entry-level car featured a 1.4-litre petrol engine (badged 1.4-DSI), while there was also a 1.8-VTEC unit. Diesel fans could opt for Honda's excellent all-alloy 2.2-iCDTi unit.
  • Jan 2006: A new Civic IMA hybrid saloon was offered, but it didn't feature the radical five-door hatch styling, even if the technology was more cutting-edge.
  • Jan 2007: A three-door Civic was introduced, in the shape of the Type S, which is fitted with a choice of 1.8 petrol or 2.2-litre diesel powerplants. There was also a high-spec edition introduced, called the GT.

Honda i-VTEC engine save the fuel

Technology used in Honda's i-VTEC engine to save fuel

The new Honda City is a very well developed with technical precision and a number of innovative technologies car. The car has withstood difficult to compete with larger sedans in the Indian car market with Maruti Suzuki SX4.

The award-winning features of the new Honda City are the advanced i-VTEC engine, brilliant style and Security Feature Pack upscale. The intelligent VTEC engine was developed by a team of skilled and talented engineers to meet the growing demand for high energy efficiency. In response to the demand, the engineers tweaked every component of the car's engine so that it can produce maximum power and unmatched cars. With the success of the technology offers VTEC engine of excellence in all areas of the automotive industry.

The main reason for the new Honda City has market revolution of the automobile is a powerful and highly efficient i-VTEC engine. Each component of the engine is to achieve leading fuel economy class.

Some of the technology has to have the i-VTEC engine Honda economical:

Patterned Piston Coating

The best way to improve fuel economy is to reduce the friction. This can be done by modifying the engine components. Honda engineers done by changing the configuration of the surface of the coating flask. Piston Coating grounds, the friction decreases further improved fuel efficiency.

Auto tensioner with belt drive

Car automatically clamps the opening and closing of the intake valves and the exhaust gas of the engine. When equipped with the drive belt, it helps to control the tension of belt relative to the speed of evolution. Honda engineers equipped auto tensioner with the auxiliary drive belt connected to the crankshaft and the camshaft. The voltage associated with the drive belt and absorbs all voltage variations may help to reduce fuel consumption.

Plastic coating

Energy can also be the total weight of the vehicle is reduced to be improved. If the weight of the car is the engine need more power to get the car and if the weight is reduced, comparatively less energy is needed to pull the car. Honda engineers have also applied the same principle and reduced engine weight. They used plastic covers instead of aluminum lid of the car engine cover. Plastic cover of the engine reduced engine weight of about 1 kg, which reduces the overall weight of the car and increasing energy efficiency.

The way of VTEC engine work

How VTEC engine work??

VTEC is a short name for Variable Valve Timing and lift Electronic Control introduced by Honda to improve the volumetric efficiency of the engine, and the VTEC system is a variable valve timing system is the first commercially used in the automotive industry. VTEC system was invented by Honda R & D engineers, Ikuo Kajitani. Here I'll tell you a little about this VTEC engine.

In an engine, cam not only determines the size of the valve opening, but also determine the timing and duration of input / output. When increasing engine speed, the inlet air-fuel mixture as well as the exhaust gas output is becoming increasingly limited. However, the fixed size of the valve opening to prevent more air-fuel mixture to enter during high speed, thus limiting the maximum power of the engine. Thus, the variable valve timing system was created to allow for more air-fuel mixture into the combustion chamber during high engine speeds, thereby increasing engine power.

Types of VTEC system in Honda

Conventional VTEC (SOHC and DOHC)

The most basic VTEC system is DOHC VTEC. In this system, the VTEC system controls the opening timing and valve for both inlet and exhaust valves. Each has 2 cam camshaft per cylinder - small aperture cam and cam large aperture. During low speed, small aperture cam used by default for fuel savings. During a high-speed, electronic solenoid open oil route to large aperture cam locking pins and locking pin cam oil pressure large aperture. As a result, large aperture cam used for maximum power. When the engine speed back down, the solenoid is switched off and the locking pin is released, causing a small aperture cam used again.

For SOHC VTEC, the mechanism used is the same but the single camshaft can only control the timing and inlet valve opening only.

VTEC-E

VTEC-E works in a different way, if the conventional VTEC is used to increase the power of the engine, VTEC-E is designed for maximum fuel economy. In the VTEC-E system, only one inlet valve that opens by default on low speed for maximum fuel economy. At high speed, oil pressure pushes the locking pin to lock the second inlet valve, allowing both inlet valve used.

3 Stage VTEC

3 Stage VTEC combines both VTEC-E technology and conventional VTEC. At low speeds, only one inlet valve opened by default. First locking pin to lock the second inlet valve during moderate engine speeds while the second locking pin is moved to allow large aperture cam used at high speeds. With this, the engine uses 3 Stage VTEC benefit of both fuel economy and increased engine power.

i-VTEC

i-VTEC engine that combines technologies used by pemfasaan cam variable valve timing system to another with VTEC technology in place to reduce the "shock force" during VTEC mechanism works.

VTEC in motorcycles

Besides the engine, Honda's VTEC technology also used on some motorcycle models. It was first used on Honda motorcycles CBR400F Super Four HYPER VTEC, and so on motorcycle Honda VFR800.
